Faculty Spotlight: Stephen Kappeler
Mr. Kappeler completed his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice at Radford University, (Virginia). His thesis focused on police use of excessive force. He received his B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from Central Missouri State University (Missouri).
Mr. Kappeler answered the following questions about why he chose to enter this field, what he enjoys most about teaching, and how he spends his spare time.
Why did you choose this field?
Although I completed my Master's in Criminal Justice, I was torn between culinary entrepreneurship and teaching. As luck would have it, I was able to do both. After 15 years of co-owning and operating my own restaurant, I decided to pursue my teaching career full time. After several years of being with other universities, I finally had the opportunity and privilege, in 2005, to become a part of Eastern Kentucky University's Criminal Justice Program.
What are the highlights of teaching?
One of my passions has always been to teach in the field of Criminal Justice. Early in my teaching career, I always thought that if I could make a difference in one student's life, that I would have given back what was given to me. However, further along in my teaching career, I realized how important it is to reach every student.
The most rewarding aspect of teaching is watching students grow, not only in a single semester, but throughout their tenure in our program.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Most of my spare time revolves around my daughter, Miranda, who is now attending Eastern Kentucky University. Beyond family time, I enjoy working outdoors. I have a home that sits on four acres in the country, and there are always plenty of beautification projects going on, i.e., gardening, landscaping, etc.
